What is the “Independent items” row, and why is it always there?

Every band on the board ends with a row called Independent items, labelled
UNALIGNED, with the prompt “Drop here to plan an item without an objective”.

What it holds

Work that has no parent objective. An epic raised straight from a customer
escalation, a compliance feature that supports no particular outcome, a piece of
platform maintenance — real work that does not ladder up to an objective yet.

Why it is there even when it is empty

It is a drop target first and a container second. Every other row on the
board adopts a dropped card into its objective. Without this row there would be
nowhere to put work that has no objective — and the row could not appear until
such an item existed, which is a chicken and egg.

So it is always present on a product roadmap, empty or not.

When work lands here by itself

An item shows up in Independent items when it is placed on the roadmap but has no
objective. That includes an item whose objective is not on this roadmap — the
work is genuinely planned, it just has no lane of its own to sit in, so the board
shows it here rather than hiding it.

Getting an item out of Independent items

Drag it into an objective lane. That does two things at once: it schedules it in
that box, and it aligns it to that objective.

Note: in the All products roll-up on an organization roadmap the
Independent items row is hidden while empty, because that view is read-only
and a drop target you cannot use is just noise.
